The 2 A.M. Mix

Six songs for the drive home when there's no one left to call.

There's a specific kind of drive that only happens at 2 a.m.: the one where you've left somewhere you didn't plan to leave that late, and the roads are empty enough that the radio starts to feel like the only other person awake. This is the six songs I've built for that drive, tested, unfortunately, more than once.

Six songs, roughly the length of the drive itself.

None of these are sad songs, exactly, though I understand why they might read that way out of context. They're quiet in a way daytime songs aren't allowed to be — no hooks fighting for your attention, no bridge built to make you want to skip ahead. At 2 a.m. you're not looking for a chorus to hook you. You're looking for something that will just stay in the car with you.

The mix is short by design. Six songs is about the length of most of my post-midnight drives, and I wanted the playlist to end roughly where the drive does, so that arriving somewhere and the music stopping happen at close to the same moment. It's a small effect, but it's the kind of thing you only notice on the nights you need it.
