Breakup Songs You Play on Purpose

On choosing the ache instead of avoiding it.

There's a difference between a sad song that finds you — on the radio, in a coffee shop, at the worst possible moment — and one you go looking for on purpose. This essay, and the playlist under it, is about the second kind: the songs you choose deliberately, the way you'd choose to press on a bruise just to confirm it's still there.

Eight songs, in roughly the order you're supposed to feel it.

I used to think avoiding sad music after a breakup was the disciplined thing to do, a kind of emotional hygiene. I no longer believe that. Avoiding the songs just means the feeling shows up somewhere else, usually somewhere less convenient than your own headphones. Better to schedule the ache than let it schedule you.

So this playlist is unapologetically direct. No cleverness, no distance, no wry narrator standing off to the side making the pain more bearable through irony. Just eight songs that say the thing plainly, one after another. Play it on purpose. That's the whole method.
